In recent years, I’ve been noticing a trend of Figurative Expressionist paintings at the Modern Armory Show on Pier 92. This year especially, prominent works by Figurative Expressionist artists were on view. Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, a major force in the post-war figurative painting market, displayed an excellent group of Bob Thompson paintings as well as a Benny Andrews collage and oil painting.

Lester Johnson’s “Bathers in Milford,” 1965, oil on canvas, 82″ x 92″ shown by David Klein Gallery.

David Klein Gallery from Detroit displayed an incredible and rare double sided panel by Thompson called The Expulsion, as well as a great group of large scale 1960s paintings by Lester Johnson.

San Fransisco’s Hackett Mill had a very nice curated display of Bay Area Figurative Expressionist David Park’s paintings in their booth.
